Do you like Architecture? You are in luck!! From the 1st to 7th of October Madrid will become an open-air museum of architecture. This is the ninth edition of this event, one of the most eagerly awaited in the Autumn calendar.
Free tours, exhibitions and talks organised by the COAM Architecture Foundation offer the public the chance to see the city from the architect’s viewpoint. Activities include the opening of the crypt in the San Sebastián church, where the remains of Juan de Villanueva and Ventura Rodríguez lie, a visit to Alejandro de la Sota’s studio (Thursday 4th), and guided walks during which participants can discover Tiles in Madrid (Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th) and visit the Cathedral of Almudena’s graveyard (Sunday 7th).
Some of Madrid’s most distinctive buildings will be opening their doors for free as part of a programme designed to bring the city’s exceptional architectural heritage to a wider public. Each day, architecture students will present six buildings at different points along one of the city’s metro lines. Some of the thirty buildings selected pay tribute to architects who are no longer with us, including: the Torre Picasso by Minoru Yamasaki, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday in 2012, plus the Edificio Beatriz and the Royal Collections Museum, the work of Eleuterio Población Knappe and Luis Moreno Mansilla respectively, both of whom died recently.
- Monday 1st
Torre Picasso (Metro: Nuevos Ministerios): Designed by the Minoru Yamasaki, the architect responsible for New York’s Twin Towers, this building overlooks Madrid’s financial district.
- Thursday 4th
Edificio Beatriz (Metro: Núñez de Balboa): Designed by Eleuterio Población Knappe, the building takes its name from legendary Spanish humanist Doña Beatriz Galindo (known as “La Latina”), who was buried on the site.
- Friday 5th
Royal Collections Museum (Metro: Ópera): Standing beside the Almudena Cathedral and designed by architects Emilio Tuñón and Luis Moreno Mansilla, tour the future Royal Collections Museum which will open in 2014.
